輸掉具有指標意義的印州後，克魯茲演說稱，前路已斷，不得不「中止競選活動」。凱西克則稱要繼續奮戰。不過共和黨全國委員會主席普瑞伯斯（Reince Priebus）在推特發文表示，川普已篤定獲得提名，「黨內應團結支持川普」。

川普在印州得票率53.3％，克魯茲36.6％，凱西克7.6％。共和黨初選在印州採「贏家通吃」方式，因此51張黨代表全數由川普獲得。要成為共和黨候選人，需獲1,237張黨代表；贏得印州後，川普已獲1,002票。

今年共和黨初選出現大量負面作法。就在印州投票之際，川普還引述八卦雜誌，說克普茲的父親是謀刺甘迺迪總統的真凶。克魯茲立即舉行記者會，批川普，也批「那些八卦垃圾」。如今川普篤定出線，當務之急是修補黨內裂痕，他在紐約的川普大樓向歡欣鼓舞的群眾演說，向克魯茲致意，並稱克魯茲「能以全黨團結為重，展現了智慧與勇氣」。
